The streets and taverns speak of what is known as the Death Curse: a disease that affects all those who have been raised from the dead. The victims grow thinner and weaker every day and slowly but surely slide towards the death they once refused.
When they finally succumb, they cannot be raised - and neither can anyone else, no matter if they have already received this miracle in the past. Temples and scholars of divine magic are unable to explain the curse that has struck the entire region, and perhaps the entire world.
The cause is a necromantic artifact called Soulmonger, which is located somewhere in Chult, a mysterious southern peninsula, surrounded by mountains and obstructed by rainforests.

Tomb of Annihilation is a fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons adventure designed to begin with a party of four to six level 1 characters, who should reach 11th level or higher by the end of the story.
